Open Zero Dark, go to Settings and check that Alarm access says Allowed. If it says Off, tap Open iPhone Settings and allow alarms for Zero Dark, then switch your alarm off and on again so it's re-armed.

Each snooze costs 5 rank points and the coach will mention it. You can switch snooze off for any alarm, and it shows as Snooze −5 on the Lock Screen so you know the price before you press it.

Solving sums, typing your goal word for word, shaking your phone, walking a number of steps, and scanning a code you've registered, such as a barcode in your kitchen. Math, Type and Shake are free. Steps and Scan come with Pro. You can practise any mission from Settings; practice never counts.

Scan needs camera access: allow it for Zero Dark in the Settings app under Privacy & Security, then Camera. Make sure you're scanning the same code you registered when you set the alarm.

If the camera isn't available, Zero Dark switches to typing your goal instead, so there's always a way to finish, and never a free pass.

Steps needs Motion & Fitness access, in the Settings app under Privacy & Security. Without it, the mission switches to typing your goal.

Rank is worked out every day from your last 14 days. A clean wake earns 15 points, an order done earns 10. A snooze costs 5, a rescheduled order 3, a missed order 8 and a missed alarm 20. Points older than 14 days drop off, so rank has to be kept, not just earned.

The ranks run from Recruit to Private (40 points), Corporal (80), Sergeant (120), Lieutenant (160), Captain (200) and Commander (250).

An alarm that rang with no wake mission finished within three hours. It costs 20 points and ends your streak, and if you have a partner, Zero Dark offers to draft the message telling them.

Only from mornings you actually had. Streaks, clean weeks, early starts and orders all count. Each mission is also timed from when you open it to when you finish, and your best time for each mission is the one to beat. Practice never counts.
